Digitization Activities - Project Planning and Management Outline, Federal Agencies Digitization Guidelines Initiative, Version 1.0 November 2009.
"The aim of this document is to define activities relating to the digitization of original cultural materials, and to outline general steps for planning and management of this process. The activities described in this document address library/archival issues, imaging and conversion work, and IT infrastructure issues in particular, and were identified using project management outlines from several organizations with significant experience working with cultural materials. This document defines "digitization" as a complete process, and covers all project components from content selection through delivery of digitized objects into a repository environment."

Social Isolation and New Technology, by Keith Hampton, Lauren Sessions, Eun Ja Her, and Lee Rainie, Pew Internet & American Life Project, November 4, 2009.
From the Overview: "This report adds new insights to an ongoing debate about the extent of social isolation in America. A widely-reported 2006 study argued that since 1985 Americans have become more socially isolated, the size of their discussion networks has declined, and the diversity of those people with whom they discuss important matters has decreased. In particular, the study found that Americans have fewer close ties to those from their neighborhoods and from voluntary associations. Sociologists Miller McPherson, Lynn Smith-Lovin and Matthew Brashears suggest that new technologies, such as the internet and mobile phone, may play a role in advancing this trend."

What to Withdraw? Print Collections Management in the Wake of Digitization, oger C. Schonfeld (Manager of Research) & Ross Housewright (Analyst), Ithaka S+R, September 29, 2009.
From the Executive Summary: "The large-scale digitization of print journal collections has led to most access needs being met via digital surrogates. Numerous libraries would therefore like to reassign the space occupied by print collections towards higher-value uses. To aid their planning, this report addresses two key questions: which types of print journals can libraries withdraw responsibly today, and how can that set of materials be expanded to allow libraries the maximum possible flexibility?"

Affordable and Open Textbooks: An Exploratory Study of Faculty Attitudes, by Diane Harley, Ph.D., Center for Studies in Higher Education (CSHE), October 2009.
From the Introduction: "The Student Public Interest Research Groups (Student PIRGs) have been working on the problem of textbook affordability for college students since 2003. At the same time, Open Educational Resources (OERs) learning materials distributed openly for either no or minimal cost may have become commonplace enough that a credible, viable infrastructure for open textbooks, one that mainstream faculty would accept, could be imaginable....In 2007, the Student PIRGs launched a two-year campaign (MakeTextbooksAffordable.org/statement) to drive mainstream faculty's acceptance of open textbooks and other affordable alternatives to traditional textbooks. The goal of the campaign was to instigate a shift in the market toward lower-cost materials like open textbooks....UC Berkeley's Center for Studies in Higher Education was awarded a grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, via the Student PIRGs, to conduct an independent, objective, and exploratory analysis of the campaign."

Income Models for Open Access: An Overview of Current Practice, Raym Crow, Senior Consultant, SPARC Consulting Group, SPARC September 2009.
From the Preface: "It remains to be seen whether the social and economic limitations of the current market and models for distributing research literature will lead to a comprehensive, systemic change in funding for scholarship and research, or to a multiplicity of new, alternative business models. Whatever the future, SPARC recognizes the immediate need to support nonprofit publishers in their transition to new economic models. By providing this comprehensive overview of income models currently in use for supporting Open Access to scholarly and scientific journals, SPARC continues its commitment to providing that support."

Study of the North American MARC Records Marketplace, by Ruth Fischer and Rick Lugg, R2 Consulting LLC, for the Library of Congress, October 2009.
From the Introduction: "In January 2009, the Library of Congress (LC) contracted with R2 Consulting LLC (R2) to investigate and describe current approaches to the creation and distribution of MARC records in US and Canadian libraries. The primary focus is on the economics of existing practice, in effect mapping the 'marketplace' for cataloging records, including incentives for and barriers to production. The underlying question is whether sufficient cataloging capacity exists in North America, and how that capacity is distributed."

Goings On
IFLA-TISS International Workshop on Capacity Building in the Knowledge Environment, 18 - 19 December 2009, Mumbai, India.
"The gap between the info-rich and info-poor societies is increasing day by day. However, a critical thinking and research done into this revealed that even if the information is made available to the societies, the use of it for the betterment of ones own life is still limited because of various reasons like infrastructure and connectivity. And, one most prominent reason appears to be the inability of users at all levels to effectively access even the available information. It is precisely to address this situation, Sir Dorabji Tata memorial Library, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai is organizing a two day Primary workshop in collaboration with International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA)to train library and information professionals in information literacy skills."
