Digitization Activities - Project Planning and Management Outline, Federal Agencies Digitization Guidelines Initiative, Version 1.0 November 2009.
"The aim of this document is to define activities relating to the digitization of original cultural materials, and to outline general steps for planning and management of this process. The activities described in this document address library/archival issues, imaging and conversion work, and IT infrastructure issues in particular, and were identified using project management outlines from several organizations with significant experience working with cultural materials. This document defines "digitization" as a complete process, and covers all project components from content selection through delivery of digitized objects into a repository environment."

Social Isolation and New Technology, by Keith Hampton, Lauren Sessions, Eun Ja Her, and Lee Rainie, Pew Internet & American Life Project, November 4, 2009.
From the Overview: "This report adds new insights to an ongoing debate about the extent of social isolation in America. A widely-reported 2006 study argued that since 1985 Americans have become more socially isolated, the size of their discussion networks has declined, and the diversity of those people with whom they discuss important matters has decreased. In particular, the study found that Americans have fewer close ties to those from their neighborhoods and from voluntary associations. Sociologists Miller McPherson, Lynn Smith-Lovin and Matthew Brashears suggest that new technologies, such as the internet and mobile phone, may play a role in advancing this trend."

Summary Report of the PREMIS Implementation Fair, 2009.
"The PREMIS Implementation Fair, sponsored by the Library of Congress, was held on October 7, 2009 in San Francisco. There were over 40 attendees and registrants from 14 different countries. The day was divided into eight sessions focused on the status of PREMIS, implementation in METS, tools, systems, changes in the data model, two sets of case studies, and an open discussion of implementation issues."

Affordable and Open Textbooks: An Exploratory Study of Faculty Attitudes, by Diane Harley, Ph.D., Center for Studies in Higher Education (CSHE), October 2009.
From the Introduction: "The Student Public Interest Research Groups (Student PIRGs) have been working on the problem of textbook affordability for college students since 2003. At the same time, Open Educational Resources (OERs) – learning materials distributed openly for either no or minimal cost – may have become commonplace enough that a credible, viable infrastructure for open textbooks, one that mainstream faculty would accept, could be imaginable....In 2007, the Student PIRGs launched a two-year campaign (MakeTextbooksAffordable.org/statement) to drive mainstream faculty's acceptance of open textbooks and other affordable alternatives to traditional textbooks. The goal of the campaign was to instigate a shift in the market toward lower-cost materials like open textbooks....UC Berkeley's Center for Studies in Higher Education was awarded a grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, via the Student PIRGs, to conduct an independent, objective, and exploratory analysis of the campaign."

"EDUCAUSE Core Data Service Fiscal Year 2008 Summary Report summarizes much of the data collected through the 2008 EDUCAUSE core data survey about campus information technology (IT) environments at colleges and universities in the U.S. and abroad. The report presents aggregated data and time trends through more than 100 figures and tables and accompanying descriptive text in five areas relevant to planning and managing IT in higher education: IT Organization, Staffing, and Planning; IT Financing and Management; Faculty and Student Computing; Networking and Security; and Information Systems. Appendices include a brief historical context, a list of participating campuses, the 2008 survey instrument, a glossary of terms from the survey, and a crosswalk between survey questions and figures and tables in the report."
