Journal authors' rights perception and reality, by Sally Morris, Morris Associates, Copyright © Publishing Research Consortium 2009.
From the Introduction to the Report: "An objective analysis of what authors say they want, what they think their agreements allow, and what publishers' agreements actually allow, has hitherto been absent. The present paper attempts to provide this, by looking in detail at two major surveys"

Assessing the Impacts of Changes in the Information Technology R&D Ecosystem: Retaining Leadership in an Increasingly Global Environment , National Research Council ISBN: 978-0-309-11882-8, 204 pages, 6 x 9, paperback (2009) $40.73.
From the Preface: "The sustained development of information technology (IT) over the past several decades has contributed significantly to nearly every aspect of the U.S. economy and society. This development has been fueled by the participation and cooperation of members of an ecosystem comprising academic, industry, and government IT research and development (R&D) performers and supporters. Concern has been growing, however, that the historically highly successful U.S. IT innovation ecosystem is at risk. In this period of intense global competition reflecting, notably, the growing economic strength of India and China the consequences for the United States of a less than vital IT R&D ecosystem could be quite severe. To address these concerns, the National Science Foundation asked the National Research Council (NRC) to assess the impacts of changes in the IT R&D infrastructure."

The Mobile Difference, by John Horrigan, Pew Internet & American Life Project, March 25, 2009.
"Mobile connectivity is now a powerful differentiator among technology users. Those who plug into the information and communications world while on-the-go are notably more active in many facets of digital life than those who use wires to jack into the internet and the 14% of Americans who are off the grid entirely...The typology of information and communication technology users developed by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project is based on two surveys concluded in December 2007."

Best Practices for Publishing Journal Articles, NFAIS Working Group, The National Federation of Advanced Information Services (NFAIS), February 2009.
"In late 2007, the number of publishers releasing articles one-by-one had increased substantially, and many other publishers were considering doing so. Because there were no standards, abstracting and indexing services were encountering a variety of issues that made it difficult for them to index and process the articles. When NFAIS held a members-only meeting on the subject, nearly fifty people attended. The consensus was that a Working Group should be formed to recommend Best Practices that might evolve into industry practice."

Working Together or Apart: Promoting the Next Generation of Digital Scholarship , Report of a Workshop Cosponsored by the Council on Library and Information Resources and The National Endowment for the Humanities, Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) pub 145, March, 2009. 78 pp. $25. ISBN 978-1-932326-33-8.
From the Executive Summary to the report: "On September 15, 2008, CLIR, in cooperation with the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), held a symposium to explore research topics arising at the intersection of humanities, social sciences, and computer science. The meeting addressed two fundamental questions: (1) how do the new media advance and transform the interpretation and analysis of text, image, and other sources of interest to the humanities and social sciences and enable new expression and pedagogy?, and (2) how do those processes of inquiry pose questions and challenges for research in computer science as well as in the humanities and social sciences? Working Together or Apart considers these two questions."

A Status Report on JPEG 2000 Implementation for Still Images: The UConn Survey, by David Lowe and Michael J. Bennett, University of Connecticut - Storrs.
"JPEG 2000 is the product of thorough efforts toward an open standard by experts in the imaging field. With its key components for still images published officially by the ISO/IEC by 2002, it has been solidly stable for several years now, yet its adoption has been considered tenuous enough to cause imaging software developers to question the need for continued support. Digital archiving and preservation professionals must rely on solid standards, so in the fall of 2008 the authors undertook a survey among implementers (and potential implementers) to capture a snapshot of JPEG 2000's status, with an eye toward gauging its perception within this community."

Dispelling myths about e-books with empirical evidence (Summary Report), Caren Milloy, Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) E-books Project Manager, March 2009.
"During the last two years, the JISC national e-books observatory has collaborated with universities in the UK, gathering real time evidence on how course text e-books are actually used by students and teachers. The project commenced in 2007 with the licensing of 36 course text e-books for students on business management, media studies, engineering and medicine courses. These e-books were selected by the higher education community and made available free of charge to all users in UK higher education. 127 universities, 76% of all higher education, participated in the project and worked with JISC Collections and CIBER at University College London on the deep log analysis study." PersDB 2009 3rd International Workshop on Personalized Access, Profile Management, and Context Awareness in Databases, 28 August 2009, Lyon, France. Call for papers. The submission deadline is 26 June 2009.
"Proliferation of database-driven web sites has brought upon a plethora of information access and dissemination applications. Monitoring and trading stock portfolios, news notification, weather tracking, and even simple search are just a few examples. In addition, recently, new applications have emerged that go beyond information access and dissemination and enhance creativity, information sharing and exploration, and collaboration among users, providing richer interaction possibilities. Now, users cannot only access content but they can also generate, share and modify content, compose their applications, enhance their interface, etc. Web-based communities, wikis, social networks, mashups, folksonomies are some of the emerging new applications. In all these applications, different notions of user information, such as preferences, community memberships and social interactions, and context information, such as a user's social network, location, time, and other features of a user's environment, are of paramount importance in order to improve and personalize user experience. In this context, new challenges emerge for user-centric, context-aware database systems for storing and managing different aspects of user and context information, for data management and computing taking into account personal, social and contextual information about users and for customizability of their behavior."

The 2nd International Multi-Conference on Engineering and Technological Innovation: IMETI 2009, 10 - 13 July 2009, Orlando, Florida, USA.
"Publications and conferences related to Engineering are usually oriented to one of its three dimensions. While this is an adequate thing to do when disciplinary focus is sought, it does not represent Engineering as a whole and it misses the very important synergic relationships among the three kinds of engineering activities mentioned above. This is why a group of scholars, professionals and consultants, in the field of engineering, considered the possibility of initiating a publishing process and organizing a conference where presentations will not be reduced to one of the Engineering's dimensions, but to foster the participation of academics, practitioners and managers in the three dimensions of Engineering, in the same conference, or in the same publication, so they can synergistically interact with each other. A consequence of this purpose is the organization of IMETI 2009."

The First International Conference on 'Networked Digital Technologies', 28 - 31 July 2009, Ostrava, The Czech Republic.
"Currently, a number of institutions across the countries are working to evolve better models to provide collaborative technology services for scholarship by creating shared cyberspace thro expert collaboration, but this is a challenge for the institutions for a number of reasons. In the last few years, the landscape of digital technology applications projects for the various disciplines in humanities, social sciences, and sciences appears induced by many initiatives. For the creation of research clusters, the research community has thousands of databases, websites, local computing clusters, and web-based tools around individual themes, interests and projects. In most cases, these tools and resources are and were created to meet the specific needs of a particular community. In many cases, the funding and support for these critical initiatives is fragile and temporary, and directed in piecemeal fashion. There is a need to provide concerted efforts in building federated digital technologies that will enable the formation of network of digital technologies."
