  • E-reader ownership doubles in six months, by Kristen Purcell, June 27, 2011, Pew Internet & American Life Project.

    "The percent of U.S. adults with an e-book reader doubled from 6% to 12% between November 2010 and May 2011. Hispanic adults, adults younger than age 65, college graduates and those living in households with incomes of at least $75,000 are most likely to own e-book readers. Parents are also more likely than non-parents to own these devices....The results in this report are based on data from telephone interviews conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International from April 26 to May 22, 2011, among a sample of 2,277 adults, age 18 and older."

  • 2nd International Conference on African Digital Libraries and Archives (ICADLA-2), 14 - 18 November 2011, Johannesburg, South Africa. Call for papers. The submission deadline for abstracts is 15 August 2011.

    "ICADLA-2 will provide a platform for the realisation of the outcomes of ICADLA-1 and it will provide a forum for African Institutions to:

    • Access and examine options for capacity development in all strategic areas of digitisation;
    • Strengthen existing and build new networks and linkages necessary for knowledge sharing in the area;
    • Understand the strategic and management issues of developing digital resources from digitisation to delivery;
    • Develop national digitisation programmes and strategies aimed at establishing the required digitisation infrastructure for access to, and long term preservation of, African scholarly and cultural digital content and the creation of digital libraries"

  • The Sixth International Workshop on Ontology Matching, collocated with the 10th International Semantic Web Conference ISWC-2011, 23 or 24 October 2011, Bonn, Germany. Call for papers. The submission deadline is 15 August 2011.

    "Ontology matching is a key interoperability enabler for the Semantic Web, as well as a useful tactic in some classical data integration tasks dealing with the semantic heterogeneity problem. It takes the ontologies as input and determines as output an alignment, that is, a set of correspondences between the semantically related entities of those ontologies. These correspondences can be used for various tasks, such as ontology merging, data translation, query answering or navigation on the web of data. Thus, matching ontologies enables the knowledge and data expressed in the matched ontologies to interoperate."

  • Social Media and Web Science: The Web as a living space (European afternoon), 22 March 2012, Dusseldorf, Germany. Call for papers. The submission deadline is 31 August 2011.

    "While the presentations of the main conference will be held in German, it is planned to also organize a special research track in the English language. This 'European Afternoon' will take place on March 22nd. We would like to welcome researchers and practitioners interested in the social dimensions of Web developments and information technologies, e.g. from the fields of information science, library and documentation science, computer science, digital humanities, linguistics, psychology, political science, law and economics."

    "VuStuff is an annual conference on the intersection between scholarship and technology, held at Villanova University's Falvey Memorial Library....The theme for this year is "openness." VuStuff seeks presentations on scholarly communication, technology, digital humanities, digital libraries, new media, open access, or any aspect relating to the above. Presentations will be 20 minutes, followed by a brief Q&A."

  • The Fourth International Workshop on Evaluating Information Access (EVIA 2011), 6 December 2011, Tokyo, Japan. Call for papers. The submission deadline is 13 September 2011.

    "Information Access technologies provide the interface between human information needs and digital information resources. The reliable evaluation of these technologies has been recognized for decades as central to the advancement of the field. As information retrieval becomes more pervasive, the forms of retrieval more diverse, and retrieval tools richer, the importance of effective, efficient, and innovative evaluation grows as well.
