    From the Abstract: "In June 2011, Stanford University hosted a group of librarians and technologists to examine issues and challenges surrounding the use of linked data for library applications. This report summarizes the activities and discussions that took place during the workshop, describes what came out of the workshop, outlines next steps identified by the participants, and provides contextual and background information, including preliminary reports and biographies of workshop participants. The workshop report was produced and edited by the participants and staff at Stanford University Libraries."

  • Supporting Humanities Doctoral Student Success: A Collaborative Project between Cornell University Library and Columbia University Libraries, by Gabriela Castro Gessner, Damon E. Jaggars, Jennifer Rutner, and Kornelia Tancheva, published by the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), October 2011.

    "To investigate the needs of their institution's doctoral students in the humanities and determine whether the library can influence student success, the Cornell University Library and Columbia University Libraries conducted a collaborative ethnographic user needs study. The study was supported by grants from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, the Council on Library and Information Resources, and funding from the two universities' graduate schools."

    From the Forward to the report: "The results of this study will inform the larger academic library community, especially the members of the Association of Research Libraries, the Oberlin Group, and the University Libraries Group. It has sparked dialogue in multiple forums, within the workshops and in the larger community through the publication of this report. We hope that the recommendations will also catalyze the further development and professionalization of library publishing services, and will advance the community's further articulation of the important role in the scholarly communication ecosystem that these operations hold."

    From the Executive Summary: "This Preliminary Analysis and Discussion Document (the 'Analysis') addresses the issues raised by the intersection between copyright law and the mass digitization of books. The Copyright Office (the 'Office') has prepared this Analysis for the purpose of facilitating further discussion among the affected parties and the public – discussions that may encompass a number of possible approaches, including voluntary initiatives, legislative options, or both."

    "This report explores how Europeana is actually used by millions of online visitors, with particular reference to the thousands of people that access it via mobile devices, like smart phones and iPads. The data upon which the report is based comes from the digital 'footprints' that people routinely leave behind them when they use the website, whatever platform they use to access Europeana."

The library's traditional role as a repository for physical books and periodicals is quickly fading, with important implications for space utilization, resource acquisition, and staffing."

    "The ARL escience survey in 2009 confirmed how profoundly and quickly technology has transformed research in the sciences. Research in the humanities is being transformed as well. Digital humanities is an emerging field which employs computer-based technologies with the aim of exploring new areas of inquiry in the humanities."

    "This guide outlines the functions and procedures of archives, and is designed both for first-time archives users and scholars who have already conducted research in archives. The content covers how archives function, how to identify appropriate archives for your research, and how to access historical materials and research at an archives. Repositories and their collecting scopes and practices may differ, but the principles in this guide should assist you in accomplishing your research goals at any archival institution."

    From the Introduction: "The current guidelines recognize the growth and maturation of archival studies programs and serve as a benchmark against which graduate programs in archival studies may be measured. These guidelines establish minimum standards for archival education programs in terms of mission, curriculum, faculty, and infrastructure."

  • Living the Future: Organizational Performance Assessment (Preprint Version), by Raynna Bowlby, Library Management Consulting Storrs, CT, USA and Graduate School of Library and Information Sciences Simmons College, Boston, MA, USA.

    Abstract: "Organizational performance assessment is a practice-based framework that builds on the synergy between planning and assessment, and results in the discernment of impact and value. It promotes a set of practices that enable the library to effectively integrate planning, strategy, performance, assessment, and organizational development in order to advance the parent institution's mission. This paper discusses some foundations of organizational performance assessment, useful practices, and examples from libraries that are 'living the future.'"   • Reconfiguring Service Delivery, SPEC Kit 327, Executive Summary, by Kay Vyhnanek and Christy Zlatos, published by the Association of Research Libraries, December 2011.

    "This SPEC Kit investigates whether and how ARL member libraries have reconfigured staffed service delivery points in the main library and in any branches that report to the main library. It explores whether service points and/or branches have been added, closed, or consolidated; the drivers for those decisions; the impacts on staff; the changes in delivery methods; and whether there have been any collaborations with other institutions or consortia, or outsourcing of service delivery. It also explores user involvement in the planning for service changes and whether the effectiveness of new service configurations has been assessed."     This 20th anniversary issue also marks the 15th anniversary of the journal's publication on the Web.
